In 1972 the Philadelphia Mint used three slightly different reverse dies to strike circulation strike coins. It struck a Type1, Type 2 and a Type 3.
All three Types illustrate a round outline of the U.S. and other surrounding countries on the reverse of the coin. Some of these surrounding countries are the Islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which are shown just South of Florida on the reverse of the coin.
On a 1972 Type 1 Eisenhower Dollar reverse, the island of Jamaica is only shown towards the South East but in reality, it should also be illustrated towards the South East side of Florida. This is probably one of the reasons why the Mint decided to modify the design along with the fact that the Type 1 was struck with a low relief design.
| The 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower dollar is by far the rarest of the three, with an estimated mintage under 100,000 (likely fewer than 40,000 surviving), making it a key coin in the series. It was created by a mistaken Proof reverse die, identified by the absence of islands below Florida and a weak, "fading" Earth |

The 1976 Eisenhower Dollar had a one year reverse design displaying the Liberty Bell as well as an image of the moon in the background.
1976 Eisenhower Dollars were actually struck in 1975 but had the date of 1976 on the actual coins.
The 1976 Type 1 is the scarcer variety from the Type I and Type II variations struck this year. Even examples in MS65 are very hard to find for the 1976 Type I.
| Any example grading MS66 or higher for this coin should definitely be sent in to get graded, so that it remainspreserved for many years to come as it is a rare coin in higher grade condition. |
There are two distinct rim styles for the 1979-P dollar, one of which carries a substantial premium: the scarce Wide Rim (Near Date) and the common Narrow Rim (Far Date).
